| The “Place du Consulat d’Angleterre” is of the British High Commission when it was located on what is now Cumhuriyet Meydanı, opposite the Northern side of Swiss Hotel. This site had remained vacant after the fire of 1922. Part of the land was donated in the early 1970s to the Turkish Red Crescent Society which still occupies, and the rest was sold and the proceeds went to modernising the Embassy in Ankara, consequently cutting off any chances for Izmir to own a permanent UK Consular building - information courtesy of George Galdies. |
